Overview

What Ethena actually does.

Ethena is a synthetic dollar protocol that issues USDe, a delta-neutral stablecoin. Rather than holding fiat in a bank, USDe maintains its peg by combining staked ETH collateral with offsetting perpetual futures hedges, a design intended to keep the dollar value stable while generating yield from the underlying positions. On Solana, Ethena extended its model by co-developing JupUSD together with Jupiter, one of Solana's central DeFi venues. This collaboration is backed by BlackRock's BUIDL Fund, bringing institutional-grade backing and stablecoin infrastructure into the Solana DeFi ecosystem and connecting on-chain dollar liquidity with traditional asset management. For Solana DeFi users, Ethena offers exposure to a synthetic dollar plus high-yield staking opportunities through sUSDe, the staked form of USDe. This appeals to users seeking dollar-denominated yield within DeFi, as well as to protocols and traders who want institutional-grade stablecoin rails on a high-throughput chain. The honest caveat is that delta-neutral synthetic dollars carry distinct risks compared with fiat-backed stablecoins. The peg depends on the health of perpetual futures markets and funding rates, which can turn negative, and on the integrity of the hedging mechanism. Yields are not guaranteed and can compress or invert. Users should understand that a synthetic dollar is a more complex instrument than a simple cash-backed stablecoin and carries correspondingly different risk.
