Russia's Rosatom is planning a large-scale used nuclear fuel reprocessing plant with an initial capacity of 400 tonnes per year, with investment feasibility and site selection studies underway and a decision expected by the end of 2026. The plant, described as the largest spent nuclear fuel reprocessing facility in Russia, would be designed with modularity to allow future capacity expansion and aims to reach full capacity within a decade. Rosatom framed the project as both a domestic environmental solution and a geopolitical opportunity, noting that global reserves of spent nuclear fuel have reached 360,000 tonnes. Russia's active construction of reactors abroad creates a strategic opening to expand its role in the global nuclear solutions market.
