How Solana Transaction Fees Work
Solana charges a base fee of 5,000 lamports (0.000005 SOL) per signature on every transaction. On top of this, users can add a priority fee to improve their transaction's chances of being included in the next block during periods of high network activity.
Priority fees are priced in micro-lamports per compute unit (CU). A simple SOL transfer uses roughly 200 CUs, while a complex DeFi swap may use 200,000-400,000 CUs. This means the same priority fee rate costs more for complex transactions.
Understanding Priority Fee Tiers
- Low (25th percentile) — Suitable for non-urgent transactions that can wait a few slots
- Medium (50th percentile) — Good default for most transactions
- High (75th percentile) — Recommended during congestion or for time-sensitive trades
- Very High (95th percentile) — For critical transactions like token sniping or liquidation protection
Solana vs Ethereum Gas Fees
Solana's fees are dramatically lower than Ethereum's. A typical Solana transaction costs fractions of a cent, while an equivalent Ethereum transaction can cost $1-50+ depending on network congestion. This makes Solana ideal for high-frequency trading, micro-transactions, and DeFi activities where gas costs would be prohibitive on Ethereum.
