Overview

What Axelar actually does.

Axelar is a cross-chain interoperability protocol that connects 60+ blockchains including Solana, enabling seamless cross-chain messaging, token transfers, and smart contract calls. Through the Squid Router integration, users can swap tokens between Solana and any supported chain in a single transaction. Unlike simple bridge protocols that only move tokens between chains, Axelar enables General Message Passing (GMP) — the ability for smart contracts on one chain to call functions on contracts on another chain. This opens up cross-chain DeFi composability that simple bridges can't achieve. For Solana users, Axelar provides a reliable bridge to Ethereum, Cosmos chains, and other networks with security backed by a decentralized validator set. The protocol's cross-chain messaging has been integrated by major DeFi protocols for cross-chain governance, yield optimization, and liquidity routing. Axelar expanded to integrate newer chains like Sui, TON, and XION throughout 2025, continuously growing the number of destinations accessible from Solana.
