Overview

What LayerZero actually does.

LayerZero is an omnichain interoperability protocol that enables trustless cross-chain messaging and asset transfers between Solana and over 70 other blockchains. Unlike traditional bridges that lock and mint wrapped tokens, LayerZero provides a generalized messaging layer that applications can use to build truly cross-chain experiences. For Solana users, LayerZero enables bridging tokens to and from Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Avalanche, BNB Chain, and dozens of other networks. The protocol uses a combination of oracles and relayers to verify cross-chain messages, creating a security model that doesn't rely on a single trusted intermediary. LayerZero's OFT (Omnichain Fungible Token) standard allows token creators to deploy tokens that exist natively across multiple chains simultaneously, rather than relying on wrapped versions. Several major Solana tokens use this standard for their cross-chain presence. Stargate Finance, built on LayerZero, is the primary user-facing bridge interface where users can transfer assets between Solana and other chains with unified liquidity pools. The bridging experience is straightforward — select source chain, destination chain, and amount. The ZRO governance token was launched via one of the largest airdrops in crypto history and is used for protocol governance and fee payments. LayerZero V2, the current version, introduced improved security modules and faster message delivery.
