Overview

What Frames actually does.

Frames, formerly MCPay, is open payment infrastructure connecting the Model Context Protocol (MCP) with x402 HTTP payments on Solana. It lets AI agents and apps pay for resources over standard web requests, turning paywalled tools and APIs into something an autonomous agent can settle on its own. It works by bridging MCP, the protocol agents use to call tools, with the x402 HTTP payment standard. When a request hits a priced endpoint, payment is settled inline on Solana stablecoin rails, so a call and its micropayment happen in the same flow, not via separate billing or API-key provisioning. The standout is fit for agent economics: traditional payment stacks assume a human with a card and a subscription. Frames assumes a machine making many small, instant payments, the pattern emerging as AI agents consume paid APIs. It is for developers building agentic apps, MCP tool providers, and API operators who want to charge per call without accounts or keys. Caveat: it is early-stage, tied to the still-maturing MCP and x402 standards.
