Overview

What Lumos actually does.

Lumos is a type-safe schema generation framework that bridges Rust and TypeScript for Solana development. It addresses one of the most common friction points in full-stack Solana work: keeping on-chain program data structures (written in Rust) and client-side application code (often in TypeScript) perfectly in sync. With Lumos, developers write their data structures once and generate synchronized, Borsh-compatible code for both languages. Because Solana programs serialize data with Borsh, having a single source of truth that emits matching definitions on both sides eliminates an entire category of subtle bugs where a struct change on one side silently breaks the other. The tool is squarely aimed at Solana engineers building full-stack dApps who are tired of maintaining duplicate type definitions by hand. By removing manual duplication, it reduces the risk of serialization mismatches and speeds up iteration as program schemas evolve over the course of a project. As a developer tool focused on a specific layer of the stack, Lumos serves a niche but real audience and assumes teams already work in a Rust-plus-TypeScript setup. Adopting any code-generation framework adds a build-step dependency and a learning curve, and teams using other client languages or schema approaches may find it less applicable. As with newer tooling, evaluating maturity and maintenance cadence is worthwhile before depending on it in production.

Key features

What's in the box.

  • Single schema definition generates code for both Rust and TypeScript
  • Borsh-compatible output matching Solana's serialization format
  • Eliminates duplicate type definitions across the stack
  • Prevents type mismatches between on-chain and client code
  • Designed specifically for full-stack Solana applications

Verdict

The honest tradeoffs.

Pros

  • Removes manual maintenance of parallel type definitions
  • Borsh compatibility fits Solana's native serialization
  • Reduces a whole class of cross-language serialization bugs
  • Speeds up iteration as schemas evolve

Cons

  • Niche tool assuming a Rust-plus-TypeScript stack
  • Adds a code-generation build-step dependency and learning curve
  • Less applicable for teams using other client languages
