Solana Pay is an open-source, permissionless payments protocol built on Solana for direct merchant-to-customer transactions without intermediaries. It defines a standard for requesting and composing on-chain payments, maintained as a Solana Foundation open-source project. The protocol encodes payment details in URLs that can be embedded in QR codes or NFC tags. A wallet scans the code and, for transaction requests, calls the merchant's server to build a custom Solana transaction — enabling more than simple transfers. It supports USDC and other Solana stablecoins, and merchants can choose to cover fees on a customer's behalf. It targets developers and merchants wanting fast, low-cost crypto checkout, including via the Shopify integration. Important clarification: while Solana Pay adds no protocol-level fee, standard Solana network fees still apply to every transaction (typically a fraction of a cent), so payments are very low-cost rather than literally free.
