Overview

What Solana Web3.js actually does.

Solana Web3.js — now evolving into Solana Kit (@solana/kit) under Anza — is the official JavaScript/TypeScript SDK for interacting with the Solana blockchain. It's the foundational client library nearly every Solana dApp, bot, and backend uses to build and sign transactions, read account state, and call on-chain programs. The modern v2 rewrite (Kit) is fully tree-shakable and modular, producing far smaller bundles than the monolithic original, and is up to 10x faster for cryptographic operations thanks to native primitives. It exposes a composable API — separate packages for RPC, signers, transactions, and codecs — so apps include only what they actually use. As the canonical, Anza-maintained SDK, it's the default starting point for any JavaScript or TypeScript Solana project, and the library most tutorials, examples, and other SDKs build on. New projects should prefer @solana/kit; the original Web3.js remains widely used and is still found across older codebases and guides.
