Decentralized oracle network for customizable data feeds
Overview
Switchboard is a decentralized oracle network on Solana that enables any developer to create custom data feeds for on-chain applications. Unlike Pyth which focuses on institutional financial data, Switchboard provides a permissionless framework for sourcing and publishing any type of off-chain data to the blockchain.
The protocol uses a network of oracle operators who run Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) to securely fetch and verify off-chain data. Developers can create custom feeds that source data from any API, website, or data source, and publish it on-chain for smart contracts to consume. This flexibility means Switchboard can serve use cases beyond price feeds — including sports data, weather, IoT sensor readings, and any other off-chain information.
On Solana, Switchboard provides both push-based feeds (continuously updated) and on-demand feeds (updated when requested). The protocol also offers verifiable randomness functions (VRF) for applications that need provably random numbers — essential for gaming, NFT reveals, and fair distribution mechanisms.
Switchboard's permissionless design means any developer can create new feeds without permission from the Switchboard team, making it the most flexible oracle solution on Solana. The protocol charges fees for data feed updates, which are distributed to oracle operators who maintain the feeds.

- Push-based and on-demand feed models for different use cases
- Developer SDK for creating and managing custom oracle feeds
- Multi-chain support beyond Solana
- Oracle operator network with economic incentives
Pros
- Most flexible oracle on Solana — create feeds for any data type
- Permissionless design enables innovation without gatekeeping
- VRF provides essential randomness for gaming and fair distribution
- TEE security model provides strong data integrity guarantees
- Growing operator network ensures reliable feed availability
Cons
- Less institutional data coverage compared to Pyth for financial feeds
- Custom feed quality depends on data source reliability
- Oracle operator set may be smaller for niche feeds
- Feed maintenance requires ongoing attention and fee payment
Pricing
Free to use existing feeds. Creating custom feeds requires staking tokens. Oracle node operators earn rewards for serving data.
