What Irys actually does.

Irys (formerly Bundlr) is a programmable datachain that provides permanent, verifiable data storage for blockchain applications. In the Solana ecosystem, Irys is widely used for storing NFT metadata, token images, and other immutable data that needs to persist permanently on-chain. When you mint an NFT on Solana through Metaplex or create token metadata, the actual images and JSON metadata are often stored on Irys. The platform provides instant uploads with permanent storage guarantees — once data is uploaded to Irys, it remains accessible forever without ongoing hosting costs. Irys supports payment in SOL, making it natural for Solana developers. The upload process is simple: pay once in SOL, and your data is permanently stored and accessible via a unique URL. This eliminates the risk of NFT images disappearing when a centralized server goes down. Beyond storage, Irys is building a full programmable datachain that enables compute over stored data. For Solana developers, this means the ability to build applications that combine Solana's fast execution with Irys's permanent data layer.
