UMA Protocol is an optimistic oracle that records verifiable real-world data on-chain, letting smart contracts settle claims about events, prices, and outcomes that have no native on-chain source. The hook: an oracle for arbitrary, human-verifiable truth. It works in stages: a party proposes a statement backed by a bond, the statement stands through a challenge window unless disputed, and disputed claims are escalated to UMA token holders who vote on the correct answer. Because honest answers go unchallenged, the large majority of proposals settle cheaply without a vote, which makes it suited to subjective or one-off data rather than high-frequency price feeds. UMA secures projects such as Polymarket and the Across bridge. It targets builders of prediction markets, insurance, bridges, and derivatives. Caveats: UMA is multi-chain, supporting Ethereum and many EVM and non-EVM networks alongside Solana, so Solana is one of several deployments; the dispute-and-vote model also adds latency, making it a poor fit for real-time pricing.
