From 2M payments a day to under 100K. What happened to AI agent payments? In just 90 days, AI agents made 52.3M payments through the x402 protocol, according to @tokenterminal. Solana led with 20.1M, followed by Polygon with 15.3M and Base with 15.1M. This is a classic boom and cooldown. In August, new integrations brought agent wallets to thousands of businesses, Solana flipped Base in daily x402 transactions, and activity peaked above 2M transfers a day around September 1. Since then, it has cooled down sharply, with agentic transfers now down 84.7%. The interesting part is not the drop itself, but what the spike proved. Blockchains can already handle millions of machine-to-machine payments a day without breaking a sweat. And the technology is ready. What the market is still waiting for is consistent demand, agents that pay for data, APIs and services every day because it's useful, not because something new just launched. Every big shift in crypto had its hype wave before real adoption. Agentic payments just had theirs.
